Driver Guide (Non-CDL)

Reports To: Operations Director
Category: Seasonal (April–September 2026)
Salary Range: $20.00 per hour, with bonus potential
Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Position Summary

The Driver Guide (Non-CDL) plays an integral role in delivering safe, engaging, and memorable guest experiences for Portage Glacier Cruises. This position is responsible for transporting guests from downtown Anchorage on two daily excursions—the Portage Glacier Express (morning) and the Portage Glacier & Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) tour (afternoon).

In addition to safe vehicle operation, the Driver Guide provides high-quality interpretation along the Seward Highway, shares knowledge of Southcentral Alaska’s natural and cultural history, and ensures vehicles and guest spaces are clean, organized, and guest-ready. The ideal candidate is personable, safety-focused, and passionate about delivering exceptional service in a dynamic outdoor environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safely transport guests from downtown Anchorage along the Seward Highway to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Portage Lake.

Deliver engaging and accurate interpretation related to scenery, wildlife, history, culture, and geography of Southcentral Alaska.

Provide exceptional customer service and respond attentively to guest needs and questions.

Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.

Maintain vehicles and related facilities in a clean, organized, and presentable condition.

Follow all safety protocols and operational procedures.

Participate in required trainings and meetings.

Maintain or obtain current First Aid and CPR certification.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform light cleaning and vehicle upkeep tasks.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Must be physically capable of assisting guests and managing equipment as needed.

Qualifications

Previous guiding experience required.

Previous driving and outdoor experience preferred.

Valid driver’s license with no restrictions; must be comfortable driving on highways.

Strong awareness of motor vehicle safety practices.

Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Strong verbal communication and presentation abilities.

Ability to learn, retain, and accurately present excursion information.

Willingness to learn about Southcentral Alaska history, wildlife, and scientific facts.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

Portage Glacier Cruises is owned by Na Dena, a partnership between Huna Totem Corporation and Doyon, Limited. Shareholders and descendants of Huna Totem Corporation and Doyon, Limited will be given preference in hiring, training, and advancement when qualifications and experience are comparable.
